    Sudden Temperature Fluctuations: Stress on Crops and Effective Management

    Day–night temperature difference is rising significantly in winter. Day temperatures are around 28–30°C and night temperatures fall to 7–8°C, causing major physiological stress in crops.

    Impact of Temperature Fluctuation on Plants
    High daytime temperatures increase transpiration. Sudden cooling at night closes stomata, thickens cellular fluids and creates micro-stress in tissues. This slows growth, disturbs hormones, reduces fruit set and may lead to cracking.

    Management Practices

    1. Use of Biostimulants
    Amino acids, humic–fulvic acids and seaweed extracts enhance stress tolerance.

    2. Calcium + Boron
    Strengthens cell walls, improves fruit quality and prevents cracking.

    3. Potassium Management
    Improves water regulation and reduces stress due to temperature changes.

    4. Zinc and Manganese
    Support enzyme activity during cold conditions.

    5. Spray Timing
    Morning or evening spraying ensures efficient absorption.

    6. Mulching
    Reduces soil temperature fluctuation and conserves moisture.

     

    7. Irrigation Planning
    Light irrigation before cold nights helps maintain root temperature.
