    Manganese Deficiency in Tomato

Manganese is an important micronutrient that helps tomato plants in photosynthesis, chlorophyll formation, and enzyme activity. Without sufficient manganese, plants cannot produce enough energy for healthy growth and fruiting.

    Symptoms of Manganese Deficiency

The deficiency usually starts in young leaves. The main symptom is interveinal chlorosis, where the veins remain green but the areas between veins turn yellow. Small grey or brown specks may appear on leaves, giving a speckled pattern. In severe cases, leaves may curl, growth becomes stunted, and fruit setting is reduced.

    Causes of Manganese Deficiency

Manganese deficiency is commonly seen in soils with high pH (alkaline soils above 6.5–7.5). Sandy soils and soils rich in organic matter can also lock up manganese. Overuse of lime further reduces manganese availability to tomato plants.

    Management of Manganese Deficiency

    1. Foliar spray of manganese sulfate (0.2%–0.5%) is the fastest corrective method.

    2. Soil application of manganese sulfate can be done before planting.

    3. Maintain soil pH between 6.0 and 6.5 for better availability.

    4. Avoid excess liming and ensure balanced use of fertilizers.
