Avocado Farming in India: A Profitable Guide for Farmers

Avocado, also known as butter fruit, is emerging as a profitable crop for Indian farmers. Its rich nutritional profile and rising demand in cities make it an excellent option for commercial farming.

    Climate and Soil Requirements
Avocados grow well in tropical and subtropical regions. Ideal temperatures range between 15°C and 30°C. The crop prefers well-drained loamy soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7. Avoid areas with heavy rainfall or waterlogging.

    Popular Varieties in India
Hass is the most preferred variety due to its long shelf life and export demand. Other suitable varieties include Fuerte, Pinkerton, and Ettinger.

    Planting and Management
Maintain a spacing of 6m × 6m for good growth and airflow. Regular irrigation is crucial during flowering and fruit setting. Apply balanced fertilizers with micronutrients like zinc and boron for better yield.

    Yield and Income Potential
Trees start bearing fruit in 3–4 years. A mature tree can yield 200–300 fruits per year. With growing demand and premium prices in metro cities, avocado farming can generate good income for farmers.
