Zinc Deficiency in Orange : Causes, Symptoms and Solutions

Zinc deficiency is one of the most common micronutrient problems in orange orchards. It directly affects leaf growth, fruit size, and overall yield. Early identification and correction help maintain orchard productivity.

    Key Symptoms
    • Small, narrow “little leaves” on new shoots
    • Yellowing between veins while veins remain green
    • Bushy or clustered shoot tips due to short internodes
    • Poor flowering and weak fruit set
    • Small fruits with hard rind and low juice content

    Main Causes
    • High soil pH reducing zinc availability
    • Excess phosphorus binding zinc in soil
    • Low organic matter and weak microbial activity
    • Continuous citrus cropping without micronutrient replenishment

    Management Practices
    • Soil application of Zinc Sulphate (ZnSO₄ 21%) before flowering
    • Foliar sprays of Zinc EDTA or Zinc Sulphate during active growth
    • Increase organic matter through compost and soil-friendly microbes
    • Maintain balanced fertilizer use to avoid nutrient interactions
