    What Exactly is Biochar?

Think of biochar as a special type of charcoal made from natural things like crop residue, wood chips, or cow dung. It’s created by slowly burning this material in a low-oxygen setting—a process called pyrolysis. But unlike normal charcoal, biochar isn’t used for fuel. It's added to the soil.

    Why Should Farmers Care?

Here’s what makes biochar worth considering:

    • Holds Nutrients Better: Biochar has a porous structure, which helps it trap nutrients and stop them from washing away. Your crops get a steady supply over time.

    • Improves Water Retention: In dry areas, biochar helps the soil hold water for longer. That means fewer irrigation needs and healthier crops.

    • Supports Soil Microbes: It creates a good environment for helpful microorganisms that improve plant growth naturally.

    • Reduces Fertilizer Dependence: Over time, you may notice your fertilizer use going down because biochar helps make better use of what’s already in the soil.

    • Long-Term Soil Health: Once added, biochar stays in the soil for years, continuously improving its structure and fertility.

A Small Tip Before You Use It

Before applying biochar directly to the field, mix it with compost, cow dung slurry, or any natural fertilizer. This ‘charges’ it with nutrients, so your crops get a good start and you avoid temporary nutrient lock-up.
