Pith Necrosis in Tomato – Causes, Symptoms & Management
Pith necrosis is a bacterial disease that damages the inner stem tissue (pith) of tomato plants, leading to wilting and yield loss.
Cause
-
Caused by Pseudomonas corrugata and related bacteria
-
Favors cool, wet weather and excess nitrogen conditions
Key Symptoms
-
Browning and hollowing of the inner stem (pith)
-
Stem swelling, splitting, or cracking
-
Wilting of upper leaves (sometimes on one side first)
-
Reduced fruit set and poor ripening
Favorable Conditions
-
Cool nights, warm days
-
High humidity and poor ventilation
-
Excessive nitrogen fertilization
Management
-
Avoid overuse of nitrogen fertilizers
-
Maintain good air circulation in the crop
-
Remove and destroy infected plants
-
Disinfect tools to prevent spread
-
Rotate with non-solanaceous crops for 2 years
