    Pith Necrosis in Tomato – Causes, Symptoms & Management

    Pith necrosis is a bacterial disease that damages the inner stem tissue (pith) of tomato plants, leading to wilting and yield loss.

    Cause

    • Caused by Pseudomonas corrugata and related bacteria

    • Favors cool, wet weather and excess nitrogen conditions

    Key Symptoms

    • Browning and hollowing of the inner stem (pith)

    • Stem swelling, splitting, or cracking

    • Wilting of upper leaves (sometimes on one side first)

    • Reduced fruit set and poor ripening

    Favorable Conditions

    • Cool nights, warm days

    • High humidity and poor ventilation

    • Excessive nitrogen fertilization

    Management

    • Avoid overuse of nitrogen fertilizers

    • Maintain good air circulation in the crop

    • Remove and destroy infected plants

    • Disinfect tools to prevent spread

    • Rotate with non-solanaceous crops for 2 years
